My Grandpa, died when I was young. He lived with my family prior to his death. I used to pour his cornflakes for him and when I poured the milk I'd ask him to tell me when and He always said "When" That made me laugh. He bought me my first two wheel bike. I still have the beautiful green sweater he bought me for kindergarten. I thought it was too beautiful to wear. I used to walk to the bank with him. Detroit and Northern on Detroit St. in Flint, MI. Just him and me. He loved to play cribbage. I picture him in Heaven playing with my Father and his Brothers. My brother George, now passed, liked to play too so maybe Grandpa is letting him play. I was only 11/12 when Grandpa died, and even younger when he lived with us. The last year or so of his life he lived "out east," back in Southbridge, and came home when the cancer was discovered. It wasn't long after we lost him. My Aunt Louise told me he was quite the "cut-up" in his youth, very witty and mischievous and fun, with lots of girlfriends. He joined the Navy right out of school, much to his father's dismay. He was a die-maker at AC for General Motors when he lived in Flint, tried out his own business for a time but was unsuccessful there. My dad told me a couple cute stories about him when my dad first came home from the war and went to see my mom. The poor man didn't stand a prayer between Mom and her mother, I guess. My memories of him are like Margaret's--the every morning cornflakes. And walking (with his cane)--to the bank, down to Flint Park Boulevard, then down to Aubrey, then up Marengo. He used to pay me 35 cents a week to clean his room. He was difficult to understand because of his stroke, and this inability to communicate greatly frustrated him. I'm sorry I don't hold any memories of how he was prior to his stroke. I remember his laugh, it was a hardy one, shoulders always shaking. My mother used to call him "Pa." I know he smoked Chesterfield cigarettes and remember Mom getting him his carton each week. He became so thin just before he died. The priest used to come to the house to give him Communion, especially on First Fridays. When he died, all his siblings came from Southbridge. It was quite a gathering! That's where I have most memories of all my great-aunts/uncles, when they came for Grandpa's funeral. That was one fun bunch of people!
