"Samuel Leonard or Leonardson - on page 55 of the genealogy
"Solomon Leonard and his Descendants," is presented a problem which "Norwich Deeds," Book III, Part A, page 411 solves for there is a recorded acknowledgement of Joseph Benjamin and wife Elizabeth, John Carter and wife Mary, John Andrews and wife Sarah, Samuel Lennard and wife Lydea, and Jane Cook, having received from their brother Obed Cooke their share of the estate of their father Richard Cooke, late of Norwich, deceased 4th Dec. 1716."

"At Preston library today, I found a file prepared by the town historian, used to write a book on Preston history. Some notes: Richard is said to have died in 1695. His widow, Grace, married Benjamin Spalding of Plainfield. Obed bought the rights of his sisters after Richard died. The release from Obed's sisters was dated 1716 [I think it means the records are located in Norwich, I will have to check] and included: Joseph Benjamin and his wife Elizabeth, John Carter and his wife Mary, Samuel Lenard and his wife Lydia, John Andrews and his wife Sarah and John Cook. p. 246: A deed of gift dated July 21, 1680 is recorded from Greenfield Larrabee to Richard Cooke of Stonington of 30 acres of land "over Showtuckett, where my now dwelling is," provided he removes & dwells upon it Richard Cooke acepted the conditions, was afterwards admitted an inhabitant [of Preston] and had other lands granted by the town. He died in 1695. His son Obed, born Feb 1 1681 was the father of Capt. James Cook of Preston.
p. 243 In all probablilty Greenfield Larrabee was the 1st settler in this region - the 1st actual inhabitant of the town of Preston.
p. 248 Larrabee, Greenfield from Saybrook son of an original immigrant of the same name, married Alice, daughter of Thomas Parke, in March 1673. He was b. 20 Apr 1648, d. 3 Feb 1739."

"Grace Larrabee was not the wife of Richard Cook Greenfield Larrabee granted 30 acres to Richard if he would settle on the land and he did. However their is no mention or listing for a Grace in Greenfield's will..."

 1680 - Norwich, Connecticut
Greenfield Larabee of Norwich, Colony of Connecticut, County of New London, with the consent of Allice my wife do pass over as a deed of gift, unto Richard Cooke of Stonington, County New London, Colony of Connecticut, his heirs and assigns forever, 30 acres of land, laid as it now is, adjoining to my land over the Showtucket River, where my dwelling house is, lying upon the south side of said land. The west end runs like a poynt to a great marked tree near a great brooke and to a path, that leads to Norwich; bounded on the norht by Larrabee's land and south by the commons.
In consideration where of sd Richard Cooke doth engage to com and bring his family and live upon sd land at least five years before he hath the liberty to sell it. If God shall please to give him life and if sd Cooke remove from sd land before the time specified, then sd land shall be returned to sd Larrabee again, he paying sd Cooke for his labor bestowed upon it. prized by two men mutually chosen by both of them; and if sd Cooke shall die before the term of five years be expired then his widow if she be living is to fulfill the engagment either by herself, or some comfortable tenant. Upon this consideration sd Greenfield Larabee, doth pass over his whole right to sd land and if sd Cooke wishes to sell the land then Larrabee is to have the liberty to buy it before any other person, he paying as much as any other would.
Upon an after consideration it is mutually agreed between the two Larabee and Cooke, that if Richard Cooke and his wife die before the term of five years then the land shall belong to the hiers of the sd Cooke.
(Land Records of Norwich, Conn; Vol 1 p 460) Cooke, Richard. A deed of gift dated July 21, 1680 is record from Greenfield Larabee to Richard Cooke of Stonington, of thirty acres of land, over Showtucket, where my now delling house is provided he removes and dwells upon it. Richard Cooke accepted the conditions, was afterward admitted as an inhabitant, and had other lands granted by the town.
