Berkshire Eagle
December 10, 1977
W.G. White dies at 90
Walter G. White, 90, of 392 Columbus Ave. died at Hillcrest Hospital Thursday night, following a short illness. Mr. White and his 1929 Model A Ford sedan, which he bought new Aug. 28, 48 years ago and is still running today, were a familiar sight on Berkshire County highways. For years, Mr. White and the late Clarence A. Crandall, an Eagle reporter and columnist, used to tour around the county in the car which they affectionately called "Little Henry."

Mr. White was born in the big white house at the corner of Onota Street and Columbus Avenue, which later served as the Second Congregational Church until the present one was built.

He was the son of Rachel Gimlich White and John White, owner of the Berkshire Brewery Association. After he graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1907, he went to work for his father in the brewery, of which he was a stockholder.

He thought he wanted to retire early, so that he would be young enough to enjoy life. His chance came quickly. The brewery closed in 1919 and he decided the time had come to enjoy life. So he retired at age 32.

Besides logging up many miles driving Henry around the countryside, Mr. White kept busy visiting nursing homes every week for several years, playing cards or checkers with the patients or just visiting with them so that they might have some company to look forward to.

Mr. White's wife, the former Mary Leonard, died in 1951. He was a member of Zion's Evangelical Lutheran Church.

He leaves a brother, W. W. Rockwell White of Averill Park, N.Y.. and a sister, Mrs. William F. Hodecker of Red Bank.N.J.

Funeral services will be Monday morning at 11 at the Wellington Funeral Home. The Rev. Gordon E. Hohl, pastor of Zion's Evangelical Lutheran Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Pittsfield Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday from 2 to 4.

The omission of flowers is requested. If friends desire, donations in Mr. White's memory may be made to Zion's Evangelical Lutheran Church memorial fund.
