"JERRY FLYNN, RESIDING AT MILTON BORO, HAS A VERY LARGE ? WOOL BUCK THAT IS SOMETIMES INCLINED TO BE UNRULY. THE 30TH OF JULY THE ANIMAL WANDERED AWAY TO THE RESIDENCE OF PETER ROWE, A HALF MILE SOUTH OF CAMP. THE NEXT DAY, ISAAC, SON OF ISAAC WELLS, ONE OF THE LONG TIME BOATMEN AT CAMP, TIED A SMALL ROPE GIVEN HIM BY HIS AUNT, MRS. ROSA, WIFE OF PETER ROWE, ROUND THE NECK OF THE BUCK AND TOOK IT HOME GOING FROM THE RESIDENCE OF FLYNN TO THAT OF HIS COUSIN, OF THE SAME NAME AS HIS FATHER, WITH WHOM HE STOPPED, HELPING WITH SOME WORK, UNTIL TUESDAY, THE 24TH OF AUGUST, WHEN HE WENT TO MRS FLYNN AND TOOK THE BUCK TO PASTURE, SAYING THAT HE HAD PROMISED HIS AUNT HE WOULD RETURN THE ROPE, AND MUST HAVE IT. AFTER PUTTING THE ANIMAL INTO THE PASTURE, HE STARTED ACROSS LOTS FOR HOME, AFTER WHICH NOTHING WAS HEARD OF HIM UNTIL LAST WEDNESDAY. HE HAD BEEN SOMEWHAT IN THE HABIT OF WORKING AT DIFFERENT PLACES, ABSENTING HIMSELF FROM HOME FOR LONGER AND SHORTER TIMES, AND SO NOT MUCH WAS THOUGHT OF HIS ABSENCE BY HIS FAMILY, THEY SUPPOSING HE WAS AT WORK SOMEWHERE AND IN DUE TIME WOULD RETURN. A FORTNIGHT ELAPSED, AND THEY BEGAN TO GET ANXIOUS TUESDAY OF LAST WEEK HIS FATHER, THINKING THAT HE MIGHT BE AT COLCHESTER POINT, WHERE THE FAMILY HAD FORMERLY LIVED, WENT THERE, BUT COULD GET NO TRACE OF HIM, REACHING CAMP ON HIS RETURN ABOUT MIDNIGHT. THE NEXT MORNING A GENERAL SEARCH ON THE HILLS BACK OF CAMP WAS MADE, THE FEAR BEING THAT HE HAD MET WITH SOME ACCIDENT THAT HAD DISABLED HIM, AND HAD IN CONSEQUENCE PERISHED. THE SEARCH WAS SHARED IN BY THE FOUR OAR-MEN OF THE CAMP AND BY MESSRS. CHARLES H. COSSUM, GEORGE H WARNER, MORRIS E ATKINS, ERNEST M ATKINS, OF THE CAMP, WITH LEWIS POTWIN AND HENRY VINCENT, TWO COUSINS OF ISAAC, FROM BURLINGTON. A THOROUGH SEARCH FAILED TO REVEAL ANY TRACE OF HIM, AND THEY WERE ABOUT TO GIVE UP, WHEN A REMARK OF THE MOTHER OF THE LAD AS TO A DISAGREEABLE ODOR, THAT HAD COME FROM A POINT ABOUT A QUARTER OF A MILE FROM WHERE HE WAS LAST SEEN WHEN GOING HOME, CAUSED MESSRS. POTWIN AND VINCENT TO GO TO THAT POINT, THEY HAVING BEEN WITHIN A FEW RODS OF IT IN THEIR SEARCH, BUT ON THE SIDE THE WIND CAUSED THE SMELL TO BE CARRIED AWAY FROM THEM. THIS TIME THEY PASSED ON THE OTHER SIDE, AND THE ODOR LEAD THEM TO A SMALL WILD CHERRY TREE, BENEATH WHICH LAY ALL THAT REMAINED OF THE LAD. HE WAS LYING ON HIS BACK, WITH EXTENDED ARMS, AND THE ROPE WITH WHICH HE HAD HANGED HIMSELF LYING ACROSS HIS BREAST. HE AHD BEEN SOMEWHAT IN THE HABIT OF PLAYING HANG HIMSELF, AT ONE TIME GOING SO FAR IN THE GARRET OF THE RESIDENCE OF HIS FATHER AS TO ALARM HIS AUNT, WHO TOLD HIS MOTHER, BUT WHEN SHE WENT UP THERE HE BEGAN TO LAUGH, SHOWING THAT HE WAS ONLY FOOLING. THE NOOSE AROUND HIS NECK WHEN FOUND, WITH THE POSITION OF THE ROPE, SHOWED THAT HE HAD UNDOUBTEDLY BEEN AGAIN PLAYING HANG HIMSELF, BUT WHEN HE LET GO OF THE END OF THE ROPE WHICH HE HAD PUT THROUGH THE NOOSE IN THE OTHER END SO HE COULD LET HIMSELF DOWN WHEN HE CHOSE, HE WAS SO FAR STRANGLED THAT HE WAS UNABLE TO LOOSEN THE DOUBLE SLIP NOOSE ROUND HIS NECK, AND HAD PERISHED ALMOST WITHIN SIGHT AND HEARING OF HIS HOME. THE REMAINS WERE IN TERRIBLE CONDITION, BUT CAREFUL FRIENDS ROLLED THEM INTO A SHEET, PUT THEM INTO A COFFIN AND TOOK THEM TO THE BURYING GROUND AT THE BORO, WHERE THEY WERE INTERRED. HE WOULD HAVE BEEN 16 YEARS OLD IN NOVEMBER. HIS HOME LIFE HAD ALWAYS BEEN HAPPY. HE HAD BEEN WORKING AT VARIOUS PLACES THIS SUMMER, AND HAD SEVERAL SUMS OF MONEY DUE HIM FOR HIS LABOR. THERE WAS NO REASON WHY HE SHOULD DESIRE TO KILL HIMSELF, AND THERE IS LITTLE DOUBT BUT THAT IT WAS ACCIDENTAL. HIS FATHER AND MOTHER, HIS BROTHERS AND SISTERS, AND OTHER RELATIVES, WERE OF COURSE GREATLY SHOCKED AND GRIEVED, AND THEY HAVE THE HEARTY SYMPATHY OF ALL IN THE COMMUNITY, AS WELL AS EVERYONE IN CAMP. HIS MOTHER IS A SISTER OF PETER ROWE, AND HIS FATHER A BROTHER OF MRS. ROWE."
