Ancestor's Death-related Information
Obituary source: New-Bedford Mercury, 1840/02/21 Died At Aurora, New York, on Monday evening, January 6, Sophia A., daughter of Maj. Asa Burnham and wife of Seneca Wood. Esq, in the 43d year of her age. Our sorrows occasioned by the disease of this estimable lady are mitigated by the consideration of the joys of which she is now a partaker. We feel that the link, which has been broken off from the chain that binds us to this world, unites us so much more closely to that which is unseen and eternal. The testimony of Mrs. Wood is added to that of myriads who have preceeded her, that the "ways of heavenly wisdom are ways of pleasantness and all her paths are peace." By the sustaining power of Divine grace, she was able to bear with christian patience and resignation a distressing and protracted illness -- and also to view with serenity that painful event, which has deprived a sorrowing husband of a beloved wife; two daughters of an affectionate mother; society of an ornament, and the church of God one of its most useful and exemplary members. Mrs. W. was distinguished by sweetness of natural temper, solidity of judgment, and for all those graces by which the domestic circle has been blessed, and on which the heart loves to dwell, and which it cherishes among its dearest recollections, -- But her disposition which was naturally so amiable, was rendered more so by the graces of the spirit; and her household virtues were enhanced by their devotedness to God. She was a christian, not in name and profession only, but in heart - in principle. She loved the Sabbath - she loved the house of God - she loved the children of God. The bible, was however her constant companion, and prayer and meditation the element in which she breathed. All the doctrines which exalt God - humble the sinner - magnify the grace of the gospel, and exhibit the love of the Divine Redeemer, were exceedingly precious to her. Hence amidst the blamelessness and sanctity of her life, she maintained an entire reliance on Divine grace, and the deepest self abasement, placing herself among the least of saints. The closing scene of her earthly existence, as we might expect, evinced the triumph of Christianity over Death, being an exemplification of a calm and scriptural assurance of her personal interest in the merits of the Saviour. While we weep with her weeping relations, and while we participate in their deep affliction, occasioned by the disruption of so many endearing ties, and the removal of so much excellence, we rejoice too with them, as we really hope they are enabled to do, in the unspeakably precious conviction, that the grace which triumphed over the love of life and fear of death, is now crowned with glory before the throne of God and the Lamb. "I heard a voice from Heaven saying write - blessed are the dead who die in the Lord. From henceforth; Yea, saith the spirit, for they rest from their labors and their works do follow them." |
