NEW BEDFORD -- George Bachman, 86, of Fairhaven, died Friday, Jan. 15, 1999, at St. Luke's Hospital after a brief illness. He was the husband of Fern W. (Wolschendorf) Bachman. Born in New Bedford, son of the late Robert and Elizabeth (Wunschel) Bachman, he spent his youth in New Bedford before moving to Fairhaven 60 years ago. He worked for Revere Copper and Brass early in his career and then was a civilian employee of the Coast Guard, where he received many citations and awards for his innovative suggestions on improving navigational aids, especially pertaining to the lighthouses in the 1st Coast Guard District. Mr. Bachman was a former member of the First Congregational Church of Fairhaven. He was also a Mason, a member of the George Taber Lodge, A.F.&A.M. in Fairhaven, and the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors. He was an outdoor enthusiast who loved to hike, having climbed most of New Hampshire's peaks. He explored and canoed the rivers of New Hampshire and Maine and traveled extensively over the United States. Mr. Bachman's greatest joy was his family. Survivors include his widow; a son, Christian J. Bachman of Acushnet; two daughters, Elizabeth E. Jacobsen of North Dartmouth and Jessica R. Kenney of Strafford, N.H.; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. His funeral service will be at — p.m. tomorrow in the Fairlawn Mortuary of Sullivan-Waring, 180 Washington St., Fairhaven.
