 Bio
"Marguerite-Madeleine Morrisseau was born about 1640 at St. Pierre De Roy, Somme, Picardie, France; the daughter of Julien Morrisseau and Anne Brelancour. She arrived in the colony as a Filles A Marier contracted to marry Francois Pelletier; brother of Jeanne and Marie above. The wedding took place on September 26, 1661 in Sillery."

"Francois was born on January 01, 1635 at St-Pierre, Galardon, Chartres, Beauce, France. He and Marguerite would have ten children before his death on July 09, 1697. She followed on Decembr 15, 1707."

"There is a story concerning the marriage of Francois and Marguerite. Seems that she was not his first love, but that he had actually been married before to a Native girl from Tadoussac; Dorothee Antaya, in a ceremony performed by a Jesuit priest. She must have died soon after, but Francois was so heart broken that he adopted her family name of Antaya, adding it to his own. His children with Marguerite were given the surname Pelletier dit Antaya, and later descendants dropped the Pelletier completely. Francois purchased the seigneurie of Dorvilliers on October 22, 1675 and named it Antaya Comporte."

"Marie-Angelique Antaya Pelletier - Was born on October 14, 1662 and died on March 17, 1741. She married Francois Banliac and the couple had nine children."

"Francois-Xavier Antaya Pelletier - Was born on December 02, 1663 in Sillery and died on January 09, 1698 at Batiscan. He married Mardeleine Thunay and the couple had at least one child."

"Joseph Antaya Pelletier - Was born on March 22, 1665 in Sillery and died on September 18, 1689 in Sorel."

"Marguerite-Agnes Antaya Pelletier - Was born on April 30, 1666 and died unknown."

"Genevieve Antaya Pelletier - Was born on March 16, 1668 in Sillery and died on February 17, 1717 at Trois-Rivieres. She was married first to Vincent Verdon and then Jacques Gagne with whom she had at least one child."

"Cathernine Antaya Pelletier - Was born in 1670 and died on January 27, 1763 in Nicolet. She married Denis Foucault and the couple had at least one child."

"Michel Antaya Pelletier - Was born in 1674 and died in 1720. He married Francoise Chateauneuf and the couple had fourteen children."

"Jean-Baptiste Antaya Pelletier - Was born on July 20, 1676 and died unknown."

"Elisabeth Antaya Pelletier - Was born in September 18, 1677 and died on November 26, 1703 at Ste-Famille. She married Jean-Baptiste Dubois."

 Fille a Marier Filles a MarierFilles a Marier 1634-1662

"When the Company of 100 Associates began their settlement scheme, their plan of recruiting only families proved to be too costly, so instead they signed on single men; tradesman and labourers; who would be indentured for three years. However, this meant that more than 80% of the colonists were men, so even if they decided to stay at the end of their term, there was little hope of them starting a family, unless they chose a Canadian girl. But, since her family would never allow her, or her children, to leave their village; the company directors needed to avoid this from happening.

So instead, they began recruiting "marriagable young girls", who would first sign a contract in France and then be given passage and a small dowry to become the wife of a Quebec settler. You might wonder why these young girls (many under 16), would risk the dangers and hardships, which by now most of France were well aware of; but believe it or not; for many it was the best option.

At the time, marriages were arranged, so if the girl's family did not have the means to provide a sutable dowry, her only option was to become a nun, if she was Catholic; or marry beneath her station. In the case of the young Filles a Marier, though a marriage contract must be signed before departure, she had every right to refuse the union, once she met her husband-to-be. As a matter of fact, many of them did just that, and were provided safe passage home."
